Artisans from Oaxaca blended their Zapotec roots with the fantastical alebrijes first imagined by Mexican artist Pedro Linares, creating what we now know as Oaxacan alebrijes.
In Zapotec culture, animals played a central role in ritual calendars and spiritual beliefs. Many deities were associated with specific animals, seen as protectors and spiritual guides — a legacy that lives on in every Oaxacan alebrije wood carving.
