Artisans from Oaxaca combined their Zapotec roots with the fantastical alebrijes first imagined by Pedro Linares, creating what we now know as Oaxacan alebrijes.

In Zapotec culture, animals played a central role in ritual calendars and religion. Many deities were associated with specific animals, seen as guardians and spiritual guides — a legacy that lives on in each Oaxacan alebrije wood carving.
